The air was filled with excitement and anticipation as players started to flock the registration in as early as 6:30AM. It was a euphoric moment to see approximately a hundred players, old and new faces alike, gather together to share their passion for the game of golf.

The players were all thrilled and eager to tee-off, but to overcome the famous West Course of Wack-Wack Golf proved to be a not-so easy task. This all-weather championship course surely didn’t let the players finish out without a good fight. The challenging terrains and well-laid traps and hazards definitely made the game more fun and challenging.

Something Cool. An Idea.

This is the easiest part about starting a business or a product. The hardest part is to actually turn that idea into reality, but that’s what Nike did.

In fact, Nike didn’t JUST DO IT…they took action and perfected “it.”

February 15, 2013 marked a very important night for Pacsports (the main distributor of Nike Golf) and the Philippines. Today was the official launch night for the unveiling of the NEW Nike VRS Covert Driver and the NEW Nike RZN Technology golf balls. This showcase was held at the City Golf Driving Range in Ortigas.

The theme of the night…innovation.

Pacsports is one of the affiliates of the GolfPH Association and we had the great privilege to be led on a direct tour by the Pacsports’ marketing director, Janina. She impressed us by leading our team through an array of activities spanning over free giveaways, a demonstration of the new Nike Covert line, complimentary food and drinks.

Their golf professionals were also on hand to show us how to correctly adjust and fit this new technology to match our swing speed and style. Nike and Pacsports definitely went above and beyond tonight.

The evening’s events started with a formal presentation by the Pacsports Nike Brand Manager Jaye Escuardo. He talked about the newest 2013 Nike line of products and showed why these products will be changing the way golf is played. 2 products in particular.

Product #1: New Golf Balls: 20XI and the Nike One RZN. Both use the new RZN technology, which possesses a special core that is lighter, faster, and more responsive than its competitors. The RZN technology improves 2 critical features of any golf ball: speed and accuracy. As we all know, golfers want to know how to hit farther and with precision. Product #2: New Driver: Nike VR_S Covert Driver. There are tons of new drivers released every year by over 20 different golf brands, but not all exude the product excellence and creativity that the new Nike VR_S Covert Driver possesses. Billed by Nike as the “most innovate club” they have ever produced, I got a chance to take a look at it first hand and even took few swings at the range.

The first thing that you notice is this driver is not shaped like every other driver in the market. In fact, the Nike VR_S Covert is the first driver to feature “high-speed cavity back technology” that conforms to USGA and R&A rules.
The driver also features a special patented NexCOR face, which is designed to deliver faster ball speed and longer shots from a wider area of the face.

Lastly, the driver has a FlexLoft system that will allow you to change your loft (8.5-12.5 degrees) and adjust the face angle with just a simple pull, turn and push. Overall, this club allows you to create 15 different options to suit your game and playing conditions. And we all know how having the right fit can improve one’s drive.

Although I had a pretty good feel swinging the new Nike VR_S Covert, more time would be needed to test and adjust the 15 different options of the right loft, fit and angle. Maybe Pacsports will even let me borrow one for a more extensive product review in the future (hint…hint…).

After the presentation, we were introduced to the latest fleet of Nike Athletes that are using Nike Golf Products.

This summer, GolfPH once again invites you to experience another exciting game of golf as we hold our 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the championship course of Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club. The tournament kicks off on April 25, 2013 at 8:00am.

Get ready to go for long drives and face undulating greens as you hit the fairways of Wack-Wack’s West Course. This 6,540-yard all-weather championship course, with its tricky and well-laden hazards would surely require more than just luck to overcome.

To make the game more exciting, we will be implementing the Texas Scramble Format:

1. Each team will consist of 4 players.

• A late team partner may rejoin his team in between holes, but not during play of a hole.
• A team lacking a player may designate a team member to hit two balls in lieu of the absent player, providing that player carries the 2nd highest handicap of the team.

2. The delegated team captain selects the best tee shot and marks the position (within 6 inches) with a tee peg (not nearer the hole).

• Player whose ball was selected will play the next shot first. Other team members will alternately play their own ball within six inches of marked spot.( not closer to the hole)
• If selected ball to play from is in the rough or hazard, ball must be dropped not placed.
• This method of play will be followed until the green is reached.
• The same method applies on the green. The ball chosen is marked (with a coin or tee) by a putter head length. Players will alternately putt from spot.
• If that team member did not hole his putt, he/she must mark his/her ball from each position until ball is holed.
• If a player missed the putt but then inadvertently knocks ball into the hole, that score will be the final score for the hole (regardless if team mates have not putted yet)

3. All other rules of golf apply to the “Ball in Play” In particular please be aware of Rule 14.2. Team members are not allowed to position themselves on or close to an extension of the line of play or the line of putt behind the ball.

• A penalty of 2 strokes will be incurred for hitting the wrong ball in stroke play and losing the hole for match play.

For only P3,250, you get the opportunity to engage in a friendly golf competition with other GolfPH Members. You can also invite your friends to play for only P3, 650. The fee includes the green fee, lunch and golf cart. Plus, you also have a chance to participate in our raffle and win special prizes. However, if you and your golf buddies choose to be one of the early birds and send your payment on or before March 31, you get a discounted rate of P3, 000 (GolfPH Members and Non-Members).

The United States Golf Association and R&A have proposed a ban on anchoring to take effect on 2016. Even though USGA and R&A’s governing body assured the golfing world that they will entertain questions and disputes before approving the rule change, it is pretty much set to take effect on 2016.

Why change it? What impact will this have to amateurs? How about senior players that still continue to stay in the game competitively because of the less back strain they achieve by using the broomstick putter? A lot of questions surround the amendment of this rule change.

Some speculation that brought about the sudden decision to the rule change is maybe that 3 of the last 5 major tournaments in 2012 were won by players using a broomstick putter. USGA and R&A maintain that it is not the reason why they decided on implementing the change, but the fact that many players are now resorting to the anchored style of putting. “Excessive” use of anchoring or the stroke being used in other shots such as chip shots around the green was also deemed as one of the reasons.

CBS anchor and former PGA tour player Johnny Miller had the chance to interview PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem during the final round of the Accenture Match Play Championships. The Commissioner states that He is opposing the rule change. “All pros have tried it, but not everyone used it. It’s not really that all players are opposed to the change, sure some players wants it removed, but majority of the players agree with me that it is pre-mature on the USGA and R&A’s part to suddenly decide on a ruling that they approved twice over the last 25 years”. Johnny Miller gave his personal input that the anchored strokes prevents the wrists from twitching or that “juke” move (creates a pull or push putt) as they call it before the stroke. Commissioner Finchem went on as” the absence of data and a concrete conclusion that anchoring creates a competitive advantage is a major question and see no reason why change it”.

Professional players such as 2012 US Open Champion Webb Simpson will be directly affected by this change.

Australian star Adam Scott rejuvenated his career when he switched over to the broomstick putter.

Commissioner Finchem added “that statistical data shows that 20% of amateurs in the world use it and 50% of college kids in the United States chose to play with the long putter. A swing rule should be substituted on anchoring and not the total ban as the governing bodies of golf proposed.” The PGA is still hoping that the USGA and R&A will change their minds on their decision.

Once the governing bodies of golf approve of the change, it will be part of the R&A’s Rules of golf. The R&A Rules of Golf is the “bible” when it comes to golf rules, and is applied to all amateurs and professional golfers all over the world. There will be a lot of debate in the next couple of months, and it will be interesting to see how it will all conclude.
